Gurmeet Ram Rahim Covicted in Rape Case Verdict, Gunshots fired in Panchkula

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been convicted of rape charges by the CBI court in Panchkula. The controversial godman-turned-actor now faces minimum of 10 years in jail since the victim was a minor at the time of the sexual assault. Dera followers, who were camped in Panchkula for 48 hours, have gone on a rampage, destroying media vans and trying to jump barricades. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of rape in a 2002 case, more than 50 private and government vehicles were torched in Panchkula on Friday as police fired several rounds of tear gas to quell the protesting supporters of the self-styled godman. Ram Rahim Singh was accused of raping two ‘sadhvis’ (female followers), in 2002 and the case came to trial in 2008. He has denied all charges against him. Ram Rahim Singh had reached the court at around 2:18 pm today. The court complex, where the verdict was announced, was protected by three layers of security, with 150 personnel of Haryana Police and paramilitary forces guarding it over a radius of 200 meters. Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar urged people to maintain peace ahead of the verdict.

Followers of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh today pelted stones and broke barricades soon after his conviction in the rape case following which police lobbed tear gas shells and fired in the air. A petrol pump and part of a train station have reportedly been set on fire in Malaout in Punjab. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has made another appeal for peace.
